Designer Profile Rajmund Hałas

Rajmund Teofil Hałas born 31st of May 1925 in Krobia in Wielkopolska – died 4th of November 2008 in Poznan, Poland.

Artist, architect, designer, teacher.

Comes from a family with a long tradition in carpentry crafts, initiated by the great-grandfather Jakub Węcławski half of the nineteenth century.

During his career he exported furniture to Vienna and Berlin. After Studies, he joined the furniture industry. In the 1956 to 1969 headed the Design Studio Furniture in the Union Furniture Industry in Poznan. In 1960 he founded the group "Koło" with Czeslaw Kowalski, Leonard Kuchma and Janusz Różański.

However, apart from the famous 200-190 Chair, Hałas designed many highly popular furniture, like a chairs, armchairs, which has been manufactured in the tens of thousands of pieces.

During the search of a good Polish design, we found many pearls. Fortunately for us, we found a very well-designed chairs. The chairs were very light, visually tiny and obviously in bad shape. Before we started the renovation of chairs, we left twofor ourselves. We used them for daily work. And, with joy we discovered, that the chairs are perfect made, even for long hours of use, not just for two-hour feasting at the dining table. Full of enthusiasm we started renovations.

The Designer and the story of their creation were the forgotten figure in the world of industrial design from the communist era in Poland.
This pulled us to search more, learn about history of forgotten design and share it.

Museum of Hałas Family Carpentery Factory in Krobia

Prof. Hałas came from a family with a long tradition in crafts carpentry, initiated by the great-grandfather Jakub Węcławski in the mid-nineteenth century. Workshop of Jakub took his son Franciszek  and Zygmund Hałas.
In 1922 in Krobia, Jakub built a carpentry workshop employing dozens of workers, which produced furniture on a large scale. He provided work for townspeople and local farmers.
The complete picture of the factory, which, though operating in the province used the latest technical developments of their time and keep up with the latest trends and fashions found recognition at exhibitions, and buyers even outside of polish borders -Berlin and Vienna, centers, where carpentery was at the highest level.
For two sons, from the youngest time, carpentery studio was a place of fun, propelling the craft by doing for themselves toys. With age getting the increasingly difficult tasks. In the end, they are journeymen, and masters of carpentry.

Family traditions was continued by Jakub sons, Zygmunt and Rajmund.

Rajmund as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan, creates the Department of Design. At work, how often he points out, that, it helps him understand plasticity of timber. In the projects is always required a profound knowledge and technical parameters of materials. He loves trees and appreciate well-made wood products but not only made of wood.

The chair type 200-190 is made of beech wood, very common and widely used for furniture production in the years of their creation. The chair has a very simple but robust design. His design alludes to the Scandinavian style.
Elegance, ergonomics and rationality of the chair are promptly recognizable features from the first look and touch. Every resting on it reveals the best of Rajmund Hałas outstanding workmanship.

Very well known chairs by our parents generation, were produced in millions, and were in many polish houses those years.
So far forgotten, today got second life, today are famous.
Today also Rajmund Hałas name got his popularity. And should, for very good designs.
Renovation of this chair preserves the time footprints as well as enhances the product with high quality materials. The construction of the chair is made of perfectly cleaned and oiled beech wood, when the seat features durable anti-stain and anti-peeling fabric. The natural wood version exposes aging stains and scars of use.
